The FDE advantage: building AI around a customer’s real work
By StarApple AI Editorial Desk
For an AI startup, Forward Deployed Engineering turns customer proximity into product evidence and repeatable implementation.

A Forward Deployed Engineer, or FDE, works directly with a customer’s team to understand and implement a solution to a concrete problem. In AI startups, the role links product engineering with discovery, system integration, evaluation and customer adoption.
FDE, explained
An FDE, or Forward Deployed Engineer, is an applied engineer who works close to the people facing a real operational problem. The role combines software and AI engineering with discovery, workflow design, evaluation, deployment, user support and handover. The goal is a system that fits the work and can be assessed in its real context.
Caribbean founders and early-stage teams: where to begin
Early buyers do not purchase model capability in isolation. They need a workflow to improve, data to connect, permissions to respect and a reason to trust the result. An FDE makes those requirements visible in product decisions.
Value comes from measured implementation
Start with a narrow problem and clear success criteria. Test one workflow slice, document edge cases and learn which integration needs recur. Separate evaluated capability from experiment, protect customer data, and document what is reusable product versus one-off service.
Set a baseline before a pilot. Use representative examples, include cases where the system should decline or escalate, and measure quality as well as speed. Keep people accountable for consequential decisions, use authorised data, and document how the system can be paused or changed.
